Review: Weaver by Kate Avery Ellison

Squee!!!  I was crazy excited when I got a hold of this one!!!

Book 3
of the Frost Chronicles!!!

So.... if you haven't read the first two .... (and why the heck not?!?!)
Check out these reviews instead to avoid spoiler-age:

and just because this is another fantabulous book by Kate Avery Ellison:

So onto the review.......

Every day, life in the Frost grows increasingly perilous for its inhabitants. The Farther occupation continues, and food is becoming scarce. And Lia Weaver’s family is facing increasing perils, too—Jonn pushes his health to the brink as he works to uncover the secrets of Echlos, and Ivy risks everything to get food for the family. And for the second time, the Weaver family is harboring a fugitive, but Lia doesn’t trust her.

Lia has personally braved many struggles—a Farther occupation, family secrets, a heart torn between two men, and Watcher attacks—as she struggles to keep her family safe. But now she will face her greatest challenge and uncover the Frost’s deepest secrets as she completes her most dangerous mission yet for the Thorns.

My Review:

Have you ever read a book and just be utterly flabbergasted at just how amazing the story and the writing are???  This book TOTALLY rocks on sooooo many levels!!!

The writing is amazing.  You're cold; you're frightened; you're frustrated; you feel everything right along with Lia.  And Lia is the perfect protagonist.  She smart and she's tough, but still vulnerable enough to be relatable (though I wanted to scream at her to trust people more and not keep secrets .... not keeping everyone on the same page always ends badly).  Then there's Adam and Gabe ....sigh.  Love triangles are sticky things, but our author nails it!  And both guys are so likable, it's really hard to be Team Adam or Team Gabe.  I'm all tied up in knots as much as Lia!!!  and I love that Lia isn't all completely obsessed with these guys, but rather keeps her focus on the bigger issues at stake.  There's so much more I'd love to gush on about, but I don't do spoilers (feel free to email me after you read it, so we discuss this incredible crazy madness).

I only have two small concerns.  One, I couldn't understand why they'd be bringing the fugitives back or why they'd want to return; afterall, they left for a reason.  But maybe I'll understand better after book 4.  Second, a certain pivotal conversation about the PLD was overheard and I cannot see how that could've happen under the circumstances.

Needless to say (as I've given this book my highest rating) I'm absolutely dying to read book 4, which I have heard is in the editing stages right now as we speak.  Can anyone say HAPPY DANCE???

"I wanted to say more -- I wanted to verbalize the feelings swelling inside me, the anxiety and frustration and longing -- but I couldn't frame them into words.  They slipped away from me, dissolving into unnamable emotions whenever I tried to speak them."

"Only when we'd step back into the shadows of the forest did I breath easily again.  It was ironic that I felt safe now, here in the Frost, but... Some things were less frightening only because they were familiar."

"I gazed back evenly.  I was frightened, but I wouldn't let him see that.  I had looked Watchers in the face.  I had watched men die in front of me.  I would not flinch...."

"I hesitated as visions of the hushed forests of white filled my head.  I saw the sky, so blue and lonely, ringed by mountains and punctuated by storm clouds.  I saw the path lined with snow blossoms, the color of hope and fear.  I smelled the scent of pine and melting ice and tasted the chill of the wind."

Don't get spoiled!
If you haven't read Book 1 of the Shapeshifters' Library,
check out that review by clicking here.

Otherwise, you're safe to proceed.........

Dog-shifters once again face the book-burning werewolves of Shipsfeather in this charming second installment of The Shapeshifters’ Library series.

Godiva Anglesey, Chocolate Labrador, and the ruggedly handsome English Mastiff Cynerik are forced to team up against power-hungry werewolves when Cynerik discovers an ancient Ohio mound that may hold answers to their shifter history. Knowing the mound’s secrets could benefit the dog-shifters in the ongoing contest for power, ambitious werewolf pack Alpha Sybilla challenges timid Godiva to a battle for the territory. Already faced with a malicious book-worm infestation and a censorship threat to ban all anthropomorphic books in her library, Godiva, who has no interest in battling anyone, must turn from running her small town library to train for a challenge she believes she has no chance of winning. Just when things couldn’t get any worse, Godiva’s mother announces that family tradition dictates that Godiva must be married by Summer Solstice… to a Druid. Godiva doesn’t even know any Druids.

Godiva wants to run her library, retrieve books for library patrons, and keep people happy. She’s no hero. She doesn’t have what it takes to face down werewolves or save the world. Cynerik, however, believes differently. Together they must defeat the werewolves, save the town and its library, protect the most important archeological discovery in dog-shifter history… and, just maybe, find love along the way.

My Review:

Much like book one, Released, Retrieved is a light and fun read that I just could not put down!  The creativity, the cute librarian references (Sweet Dewey!), and the must-love-dogs theme makes this the perfect lazy Sunday read.  I loved to see Godiva grow as a character and the competition challenges she faced were such a fun and adventurous way to instigate that change.

My only real complaint concerns the building up to bigger moments.  Events such as the mound discovery and contest challenges needed more "tah-dah, here it is!!!" to it.  That goes for some of the emotional moments, too (though I totally teared up at the happy ending!!!!).

I'm super eager to read on in this series.  These books are like chocolate chip cookies to me .... you just can't be satisfied with just one (or even two, wink)!!!!

Crazy Colossal Cover Reveal Post 4: Jennifer Martinez' Don't Kill Dinner

Okay, this one was supposed to be posted way back on Feb 5th,
but, it's still a really cool cover and the book sounds pretty darn cool....

“I love you Kenna and I will never lose you. I promise.”

There are three rules when it comes to being a vampire in New Orleans.

1) Don’t kill dinner.
2) Don’t feed from people you know.
3) Don’t tell anyone.

Not too hard, right? Wrong. Kenna is a new vampire filled with a passion that has turned into an uncontrollable lust for blood.

Will Arthur be able to stop her feeding spree before the coven comes after her or is Kenna beyond saving?

Arthur has been watching Kenna for years, wanting her to try her own hand in life before he gave her the ultimate proposal. Now that she has accepted, will his love be enough to save her?

Genre: Urban Fantasy/New Adult Paranormal Romance
Release Date:  March 15, 2013

Get to know the author......

One day while slaving away at her monotonous day job, Jennifer Martinez found her true calling. Like a firefly in the night, the pages called to her. Once she caught the bug there was no stopping it. Her fingers flew furiously across the keyboard winding tales of love, mystery and anger. She snapped out of her reverie to find herself still behind the desk but at least she knew who she was… Author Jennifer Martinez.

What she says......

I like to think of myself as a beautiful conundrum. When I am not writing, I can be found surrounded by my amazing family and 4 dogs or volunteering at a local animal rescue. I love who I am and don’t mind at all when I get strange looks from people. I am a tattoo covered, child and animal lover who looks forward to destroying peoples preconceived notions of what “someone like me” would be interested in. You only live life once… you may as well make it interesting.

I love to get lost in a good book and hope that everyone will get lost in mine.

Crazy Colossal Cover Reveal Day Post 2 (with GIVEAWAY): Ciara Knight's Escapement

Now onto POST 2 of this very exciting day!!!!

This one is an especially awesome YA DYSTOPIAN/STEAMPUNK
that came out T O D A Y!!!
I read the prequel, Weighted, and loved it!!!
See my review here.

Here's the CRAZY-SAUCE AMAZING cover!!!!

Now, let's enter into the world of the Neumarians.......

Neumarian Uprising

We need your help! Thanks to our spy, Ciara Knight, we are able to communicate with you today via blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

The Neumarian uprising has begun. We are fighting for freedom and equality for all, but we need your help. Ciara informed us that you might want to know more about the uprising and why we ask you to risk your lives for our cause. To answer these questions I’ve agreed to let Ciara tell my sister’s, Raeth’s, story about her captivity. It will be free for you on a site called Amazon until March 1, 2013.

Our spies have told us this will help spread the word and find more recruits for our rebellion against the tyrannical queen. You can help by simply downloading a free copy of Weighted,  a prequel to the Neumarian Chronicles.

If you are intrigued and wish to follow our uprising, Escapement, book I of The Neumarian Chronicles, will be available for only $2.99 until March 1, 2013.

Escapement is told by Princess Semara. Don’t hold the fact Semara is a princess against her like I did, there is more to her than you can possibly imagine.

Here is a brief explanation of her telling of our uprising:

Ten years after the great war of 2185 the queen’s reign is threatened by uprisings and fear. In celebration of my sixteenth birthday it is my duty as princess to sacrifice a slave to be initiated into the ruling council, solidifying my mother’s empire. When my own erratic powers surface I’m captured and tried for treason. Slaves hate me, my mother wants me executed, and my only chance of survival rests in the hands of a young man, Ryder Arteres, whose sister I sentenced to death.
What people are saying about Escapement:
“A heady mix of action adventure and steampunk -- leavened with a dash of romance -- ESCAPEMENT offers up its fair share of thrills, horrors and heart-pounding moments. A strong start to a captivating new series.”        -- Jana Oliver, author of The Demon Trapper's Daughter

“A riveting tale of justice, mercy, honor and love. Take a deep breath and hold on, because you'll be turning the pages of Escapement quickly. Three unlikely comrades, Princess Semara, Ryder, and his sister Raeth, embark on a journey that will alter their lives forever. The beautiful love story nestled into these action-packed scenes will make you sigh and remember why you love to love. After reading the prequel Weighted, I knew this story would be amazing, and it was. Ciara Knight truly has a gift for creating awesome worlds and characters you won't forget.”
--Lindi Peterson--Award winning author of Summer's Song.

“Betrayal, secrets, and a rebellion send readers on a grand adventure, caught in the plight to discover Semara’s gifts and purpose.”              --Alex J Cavanaugh, author of Amazon best sellers CassaStar and CassaFire

“The most unmissable series ever! I couldn't stop reading, the action and romance too breathtaking to break the spell!”              --ARC review by Sudah on Goodreads

"A courageous heart-stopping journey by young people to save their kind."         --Hildie McQueen, bestselling author of Where the Four Winds Collide

Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.

Or is that all in her head?

Layla doesn't know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.

No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?

The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.

In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.

Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?

The answer may never be far enough ... away.

Heven & Hell Series......

by Cambria Hebert

Where I came from everything is perfect. Everything is beautiful and predictable. Life isn’t measured by days, but by infinite joy that never ends.

But it did.

When I fell in love with a man who was perfectly imperfect.
The price for forbidden affection was steep and my beautiful white wings withered and died around me.

I was fallen. I am fallen.

Years have passed, and I’ve learned the true meaning of time. I’ve learned to build a wall around myself and exist alone. Yet, when he looks at me… the heart beneath my armor trembles.
But I must remember.

I must remember that I might not have anything left to lose, but he certainly does. And risking him is something I won’t do. So I lock my feelings where they belong.

About the Author........

Cambria Hebert is the author of the young adult paranormal Heven & Hell series and the Death Escorts series. She loves a caramel latte, hates math and is afraid of chickens (yes, chickens). Review: DEMONKEEPER by Royce Buckingham

Royce Buckingham

Ever since his mentor, the original DemonKeeper, mysteriously disappeared, Nat has been in charge of the demons that live in his house. Most of them are just nuisances, but the Beast who lives in the basement is very dangerous. When Nat goes out one night, a clueless burglar breaks into the house and unwittingly sets the Beast free. Meanwhile, a vicious villain, the Thin Man, wants to use the Beast for his own evil purposes.  Can Nat defeat the Thin Man and return the Beast to the basement without any major casualties?

Genre:  Middle Grade Urban Fantasy
Publisher Type: Traditional
My Rating: *  *  *  *  *

My Review:
So I had a huge dilemma in rating DemonKeeper.  As I read it, I read it as a Middle Grade story and LOVED it!!!  It's such a fun and enchanting read!  But the main character is 16, putting DemonKeeper in the YA range.  As a YA novel, it falls short of the depth of character and story I expect out of YA literature.  But as a Middle Grade novel, it's perfect!  So I decided to categorize DemonKeeper as Middle Grade and rate it as such.  Yay for 5 stars!!!!

So what did I love?  I loved the world Royce Buckingham created!  It's so creative and fun!!!  The house and all it's various occupants were amazing.  The ragtag group of Nat's demon assistants were perfect!  And while his nemisis, the Thin Man, was a bit flat, his minions were crazy interesting.  I enjoyed Nat's character growth and his developing relationships, both new and old; it's what makes this book truly spectacular.  The end made me cry and was sooooo very well done.  I have the next two books on my kindle and I look forward to seeing what becomes of Nat and his friends.

Cover Art:
This is a great cover!  It's playful, but not too cute, reflecting story within.  I also really like the German cover; just not quite as much as the US version.

Where to Get You A Copy:
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BooksOnBoardBook Depository

Don't Forget to Add DemonKeeper to your Goodreads TBR!!!

About the Author:
Royce Buckingham was born in Richland, Washington and grew up in the 70's downriver from the Hanford nuclear plant. This might explain his mutated view of the world and provides the perfect setting for his book, The Dead Boys.

As a kid, Royce dreamed of making up fantasy stories. He loved 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Phantom Tollbooth and The Hobbit. He collected comic books, watched Jaws at nine years old, then Star Wars at eleven and Alien at thirteen. He was even a Dungeons & Dragons nerd and created his own imaginary worlds.

As an adult, Royce obtained an English degree from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA and received his law degree from the University of Oregon, paving the way for a job as a prosecuting attorney. It was his work as a prosecutor and his love of fantasy that led him to write his first book, Demonkeeper.

Demonkeeper began as a short story inspired by a street kid Buckingham used to prosecute regularly in juvenile court. He was thirteen, had a green Mohawk, and Buckingham would see him downtown begging change. One day he disappeared, and nobody seemed to notice. Even his parents didn't seem to know where he'd gone, or care. Buckingham imagined the chaos of street life as a monster that rose and ate him up while people weren't paying attention, as it does with so many lost children. He wrote a screenplay from that story. The script evolved into a much more lighthearted and fun tale than the original short story, but the message remained--kids need stability, family and a home.

His longtime goal of being published became a reality after 13 years of writing in his spare time. In 2005, he hit a home run, selling his first book Demonkeeper to both Putnam and 20th Century Fox within a month of each other. Demonkeeper then hit the bestseller list in Germany. He now has five books to his credit and continues to write in his dwindling spare time.

Buckingham lives in Bellingham, WA with his beautiful wife, whom he met in the courtroom when she came to cover one of his criminal cases as a reporter. They now have two fabulous boys who help with his books and a huge black hound from the dog pound. Thankfully none have been eaten by demons...or goblins...or mutated trees.

My Review:

This is a great and creative tale!!!  I love Cambria Hebert's writing; she is especially gifted with writing the falling in love experience.  She puts those deep, can't -begin-to-explain-it feelings down on paper like no one else can and develops realtionships slowly, at a natural and believable pace.  And now we can add Queen of Suspense to her titles.  I held my breath practically the entire novel (thank goodness I'm a fast reader -- tee hee hee)!!!  The whole novel has you clenching your Kindle, asking yourself "how can this work out?!?!"  And the characters......oh the characters!!!  Both Dex and Piper are great characters.  Dex is a good guy consumed with guilt, leading him to believe he is, at his core, bad.  Piper is beautifully sweet and loving; the perfect woman to bring light back into Dex's world.  I was all tied up in knots over how this bittersweet story would end.  It was a really good ending, but truthfully I didn't like how it ended (but that's totally a personal thing, not a "bad book" thing).  Other than not loving the ending (although it was a really well done ending), my only other point of concern was about Dex's boss.  Yeah, he was a great bad guy.  Totally perfect.  But I would've liked to understand why he had such power over Dex's and Piper's destinies.  How much was a bluff?  Maybe we'll learn more in future installments, but for right now, I wish I'd been given just a touch more, maybe near the end.  Overall, a FANTASTIC start to a new series that I highly recommend!

Cover Art:

Oh my goodness gracious!!!  I'm a huge fan of Regina at Mae I Design.  Yes, I have favorite cover designers just like I have favorite authors.  And I just LOVE Regina's work!!!  This cover is gorgeous, fits the book perfectly and is purple!!!  Okay, maybe I'm a pick peculiar when it comes to the color purple ... perhaps obsessed is better verbiage?

So I KNOW you want your own copy.

Power by Theresa M. Jones: Blog Tour Stop with Review and Giveaway

I am so excited to be a part of the POWER tour!!!
I had been drawn to the book based on the cover alone (love the purple!!!)
and the story totally rocks....
wait, let me tell you about the book before I review the book.
Tee hee hee ... told ya, I'm excited!!!!
So here we go........

(The Descendant Trilogy #1)

Thousands of years after the battle between the angels, when Lucifer was defeated by Michael in the Heavens, the war is still being fought on Earth by the humans who have their Power, the Angel’s Power.

Allison Stevens is a 21 year old single mother who gets thrown into the middle of this battle when Damien, the Leader of the Rising, decides to hunt her down and kill her because he fears she is the descendant prophesied to save the world.

David, a member of the Order, takes Allison under his wing in order to show her the ropes, and hopefully groom her into being the one they have been waiting for. The only problem is that they start to grow more attached than a teacher/student relationship should allow.

But that isn’t all. Damien wants to open the Seven Seals and bring about the apocalypse and it’s up to Allison to not only save herself and her family, but save the world, all while trying to keep her heart from breaking.

No problem… right?

My Review:
I could do a serious happy dance over what a great find Power is!  I love, love, love the creativity that went in the world building: the gifts, their origins, the colors, the artists and dancers..... it's so very WOW!  I want to clap for joy!!!

The writing is great as well.  The plot flows smoothly, with beautifully crafted images and the mystery of everything unfolding at just the right moment.  The author does make us wait, teasing us with just a peek here and there until we fully understand what's going on.

I adore the main character, Allison.  She's likable from the get go, but has her issues that she must "grow" through to become that really great character.  I so appreciate a strong female lead, who must fight her own battles, but still has that vulnerability that makes her relatable.

I did have a couple concerns.  First off, the other characters could have had a bit more depth.  There's an amazing cast in Power, and while no one felt "flat," I didn't feel deeply connected to any of them, either.  I also felt that we were given some conflicting data about the gifts, but I can't really explain without spoilers (which I try never to do).  Overall, these are minor issues and none marred my enjoyment of the book.  I'll definitely be stalking the author for news on the rest of the trilogy!!!

Cover Art:
As I mention every chance I get, I love purple!!!  And it SO works with this cover.  The subtle details (like the eyes) and a cover model who truly reflects the mc's sweet demeanor, makes for an A++!

Now, allow me to introduce this fantabulous author.......

My Review:
This was such a fun adventure and I loved every minute of it!!!  It's light-hearted, action-packed and filled with unanswered questions that keep you reading late into the night.  Released reminds me of an old favorite series, Lillian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who..., with it's whit and intelligent whimsy.  I loved the librarian-speak (Thank Dewey!) and the well developed world and characters of The Shapeshifters' Library and am eager to read more.  My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed to me.  There's a couple of pretty intense revelations, that Liberty seems to take in stride a little too well.  I would have liked to see more time spent on exploring the mixed emotions (and happy resolution) anyone would have given the circumstances.  Overall an incredible, don't-miss-this read!

Cover Art:
This is a fun cover that reflects the ambiance of the book well.  The coloring is vibrant and works so well with the included elements, giving us just a taste of what we may find inside.  Yay!  I love a good book cover :)

Now onto the BOOK SPOTLIGHT....

So I'm super excited to read this one

Let's get to know our author....

As a quirky librarian I love bringing to my books a look into another world with a little humor and a story to keep pages turning. My new series The Shapeshifters' Library features a library full of librarians and dog-shifters trying to stay one step ahead of the book-burning werewolves.

Book one, Released and book two, Retrieved are available in eformat and print.  Book three, Recovered is due in 2013.

I'm also really good at relaxing people, so my latest book Contains all the tips a librarian/yoga teacher wants writers and readers to know. I wrote Relaxing the Writer - Guidebook to the Writer's High to help everyone to sits to read and writes and recorded my relaxation CDs "Relaxing the Writer Relaxation" and "Relaxing the Writer Hand Meditation" to offer a way to learn to release stress!

I've written 2 romance novels, one with a paranormal twist, Romancing Rebecca and another Flying Free about living on an airpark (as I do) and a couple of shorts.

I love to review books and my secret guilty pleasure is Goodreads Never Ending Book Quiz...current rank 492 - out of 76,7440 (old news).
